All Star Cup: Another nail biting finish...

Date: 29 August 2005

It was supposed to be a light-hearted, amateur golf tournament but as the match unfolded the atmosphere gained all the tension and momentum of a real Ryder Cup.

This weekend a host of stars from Europe and the United States gathered together at the Celtic Manor golfing resort in Wales for the All Star Cup, a star-studded golfing tournament put together by Ant and Dec, both incidently keen golfers although not included in the final line-up for this particular match.

With the US enjoying an overnight lead of six points, the European team had their work cut out to redress the balance on day two.

After a great start, the lead was closed, gained, lost, gained and lost again as the night sky threatened to bring play to a close. Then, with all to play for, the European team celebrated as Steve holed a long putt on the eighteenth to level the match. Then Ronan Keating, Peter Schmichael, James Nesbitt and Damien Lewis all did their bit to make an exciting finish a victorious one for Europe.

As Steve was presented with the Putt of the Tournament prize, he said, "I have made many new friends this weekend, it has been just brilliant."

Chris Evans was named Man of the Tournament and Damien Lewis was presented with Shot of the Tournament.

And as the celebrations continued, everyone was unanimous in their opinion that the event had been played in the best of spirits with both teams congratulating each other on an exciting and entertaining tournament... and one we will hopefully see repeated next year.
