Liverpool 8: North of England Head

Date: 20 March 2006

Having reached the half-way point in their quest to compete at Henley Royal Regatta, this weekend saw the Liverpool 8 teams competing in the North of England Head Race in Chester.

Two teams were entered and, knowing their performance would be an accurate measure of their progress so far, there was more than pride riding on the results.

The first of the teams lined up for the Novice race and came second in their category just 3 seconds behind the leaders and 20th overall.

The second eight were set for a challenge as, with only a few months training, they were entered into the Senior 4s.

The team rose to the challenge and came in 7 seconds behind the winners and a very respectable 4th in their category. Overall they claimed 13th position, which wasn't as unlucky as it sounds.

Sir Steve was pleased with their progress noting that the teams were racing over 15 minutes at the Head while their training is targeted to a 6-and-a-half minute race.

"The teams did very well," Steve commented. "If the Senior 4s had been entered into the Novice category, they would have won. We are at the half-way point in the training and, although they will have to work tremendously hard, we are on target for Henley later this year."
