LLOYD SCOTT: A MAN ON A MISSION
1 May 2006
LLOYD SCOTT FINISHES FLORA LONDON MARATHON IN SUIT OF ARMOUR AS SIR STEVE REDGRAVE SMASHES WORLD RECORD FOR FUNDRAISING
At 10.15am this morning famous fundraiser Lloyd Scott finally crossed the finish line and completed the Flora London Marathon dressed in a full suit of armour weighing 100lbs, dragging a 200lb dragon. Sir Steve Redgrave was present to welcome him over the line and to announce that, with Lloyd's help, he's smashed the world record for individual fundraising - to date, Sir Steve's has raised a staggering £1,806,916.84, which breaks the current record by well over half a million pounds. The final figure could be even higher and will be submitted to Guinness World Records for verification.
It was five years ago today that Sir Steve was knighted at Buckingham Palace and he announced, that further to breaking the world record for individual fundraising, he has now achieved his goal of raising five million pounds in five years for children's charities.
It took Lloyd just over 8 days to complete the course, compared to Sir Steve, who completed the same course on 23 April in five and a half hours. Sir Steve's target to beat the current Guinness World Record was £1,252,467. Proceeds will be spilt between 3 charities including Lloyd Scott's favourite charity CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA, the Steve Redgrave Trust and the Association of Children's Hospices. Both Sir Steve and Lloyd have received support from Somerfield and David Lloyd Leisure, Lloydspharmacy, Concept 2 and Mazars have also supported Sir Steve.
Lloyd, probably the best known fundraiser in the UK who walked the London Marathon in a deep sea diving suit in 2002, stayed at well known London landmarks throughout his journey including Cutty Sark, Greenwich Observatory, Globe Theatre, Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge. This year's event will also mark the 20th anniversary of Lloyd's own leukaemia diagnosis and he's keen to inspire those currently suffering and receiving treatment.
Talking from The Mall Lloyd said, "It's been the longest 8 days of my life and certainly one of the hardest challenges I've ever completed, but seeing Sir Steve Redgrave at the finish and hearing he's smashed the world record by so much, has made it all worth while for me and great news for my favourite charity CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA".

Lloyd said, "It's a little frustrating finishing so close to where we started 8 hours ago, but I'm pleased we've done so well today and I'm starting to feel more confident that we can finish on Monday as planned. Tomorrow we'll be back on The Highway again, but at least we're going in the right direction."

DONATIONS KEEP ROLLING IN AS LLOYD SCOTT PREPARES TO REACH HALF WAY IN FLORA LONDON MARATHON
At 5.20pm this evening Lloyd Scott got a glimpse of the famous London landmark associated with the Flora London Marathon, Tower Bridge. Lloyd will be joined by Sir Steve Redgrave when he walks across the bridge tomorrow, which will also mark half way in his epic journey to walk the Flora London Marathon in a suit of armour, dragging a 10ft dragon.
He was also encouraged when he received the news that donations were still being received on line at www.steveredgrave.com and that the campaign had received one single donation today of £1000 in support of his expedition.
Lloyd commented "I can't believe the generosity of the British public. Not only are our buckets full at the end of every day and donations being received on line, almost everyone along the route is shouting support and beeping their horns. 'RUNNING' REPAIRS AND FAMILIAR FACES ON LLOYD SCOTT'S MARATHON JOURNEY
After a comfortable night on board Cutty Sark, Lloyd Scott set off for another full day on the road, but just yards into his first mile, crucial repairs were required on the dragon and by mid afternoon, Scott needed vital leather straps repaired on his suit of armour in order to complete 3 miles.
Scott has now reached mile 9 of the Flora London Marathon. Commenting on the repairs Scott said, "I wasn't sure who was going to fall to pieces first, me or the dragon!"
Hundreds of well-wishers stopped to donate to support Lloyd, and Sir Steve Redgrave's attempt to break the world record for individual fundraising, including actor Robert Carlisle, who pulled over in his car to make a donation. Another familiar face was Scott's old Dagenham team mate, Frank Coles, who stopped to say hello!

LACK OF RAIN PROVES DIFFICULT FOR LLOYD
Lloyd Scott never thought he'd be praying for rain while attempting to complete the Flora London Marathon in a suit of armour - that is however, until today! Although rain can play havoc with your armour, it also makes roads and pavements slippery and 200lb dragons easier to drag!
Lloyd and his dragon, who are being sponsored by Somerfield, still made good progress today and after an early start, managed to complete over 3.3 miles (by 5.50pm) to Cutty Sark, where they will stay overnight. Speaking from Cutty Sark, where he's receiving treatment on his back, Scott said "I didn't think it could possibly get any harder, but I soon realised that the rain yesterday was actually helping me!" If anyone sees a man in armour chanting a rain dance this evening, they'll know who it is!
Distance covered on Monday 24 April: 3.3 miles, Woolwich Church Street to Cutty Sark
Overnight location: On board Cutty Sark
Tomorrow's route will include: Cutty Sark; Creek Road; Evelyn Street

A MAN IN RUSTY ARMOUR
Despite the rain, marathon veteran and famous fundraiser Lloyd Scott has completed the first 3 miles of his epic attempt to complete the London Marathon in a full suit of armour, dragging an 8ft dragon behind him, to celebrate the marathon taking place on St George's Day. Lloyd is taking part in the marathon to support Sir Steve Redgrave's attempt to break the world record for individual fundraising. Funds raised will be spilt between Lloyd's favourite charity CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA, the Steve Redgrave Trust and the Association of Children's Hospices.
At 5.40pm this afternoon Lloyd completed his first day when he arrived at the Military Academy at Fire Power, Woolwich Arsenal, where he will stay overnight. As well as suffering from a little rust and the rain, which added to the weight of the dragon, Lloyd endured extreme back pain and required oxygen from paramedics, who were on site. He will receive intensive treatment tonight including acupuncture in preparation for his journey from Woolwich to Cutty Sark tomorrow.
Speaking from the Military Academy Scott said "I'm pretty exhausted and suffering from back pain, but pleased we're finally underway. Dragging the dragon has been more difficult that I ever expected, as I'm unable to build any momentum whatsoever.
Schedule for Monday 24 April: Woolwich - Cutty Sark
Location for Monday 24 April: Cutty Sark
